It’s the fascinating story of a journey that began with slavery in Kentucky and ended in Nicodemus, the only remaining all-Black settlement west of the Mississippi. Join Angela O. Bates as she details the slave experience, as told by those who endured it, and tells of the efforts to solicit them as settlers. Learn about the 1877 migration to Kansas, the dust bowl years and the Great Depression as well as Nicodemus’ renewed hope through preservation efforts as a National Park. Angela is the executive director and a past president of the Nicodemus Historical Society.

Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra Musician – Trumpet Player

The MMCM and the Saginaw Bay Symphony have received a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs to bring professionally trained musicians to the museum for the enjoyment and education of elementary students and families. The musicians will demonstrate their instruments, discuss their career preparation, and may bring instruments for the children to play. The first of six performances is Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. Check the website frequently for the complete schedule. All presentations are open to the public with regular paid museum admission.

Boone's Trackers 4th-6th Grade Summer Camp

Boone’s Trackers will be introduced to the legendary hero, Daniel Boone, and learn what life was like for a pioneer. They will journey back in time and explore a world full of adventure and excitement. Applications are due no later than May 23, 2011. The cost for the Boone’s Trackers Day Camp is $150.00. This cost includes a camp T-shirt that will be given out at the end of the camp. If you wish to purchase period clothing for your child, this can be done for an additional charge of $25. The period clothing consists of a bonnet and apron for girls and a drop sleeve shirt and hat for boys.

Boone's Trailblazers 7th-8th Grade Summer Camp

Boone’s Trailblazers will discover the necessary skills and trades needed to survive on the frontier. They will journey to a past life that was filled with adventure, new opportunities, and unknown dangers. Applications are due no later than May 27, 2011. Camp will be held each day from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The cost for the Boone’s Trailblazers Day Camp is $175.00. This cost includes a camp T-shirt that will be given out at the end of the camp. Colonel's Company 9th-12th Grade Summer Camp

Become immersed in history and the heritage of Missouri. This day camp is for high school students who want to experience history in a new way. Students will participate in hands-on activities that will teach them skills and trades such as blacksmithing, muzzeloading, open fire cooking, and more. They will be introduced to the field of interpretation, which is a communication process widely used in parks and historical sites. Graduates of the Colonel’s Company Day Camp will be eligible to apply for a scholarship. Two scholarships are granted each year.

EARLY AMERICAN SUMMER DAYS

This week-long program takes children ages 7-12 on an exciting journey into New England's bygone days when they dress in old-fashioned clothing and experience fun, challenging and unique 19th century hands-on activities, games and craft projects. Activities include working in a blacksmith's shop, candle making, basket weaving, herbal lore, cheese and butter making, music and dance, and lessons in a one-room schoolhouse. Two one-week sessions are offered: August 1-5 and August 8-12, from 9:30am to 3:30pm. No early drop-off or late pickup.
