Plants will dig into nature so kids learn from Flora & Fauna, Plant Structures and Sprouting. Preschoolers age 3–5 (and a parent) explore the scientific wonders of the world through experimentation, investigation and scientific questioning. Four 4-week sessions run monthly. Exploring Ethics celebrates Women in Science on the 50th anniversary of Rachel Carson's landmark Silent Spring. Carson biographer Linda Lear will discuss how far we have come since the book was written and how far we have yet to go. In conjunction with the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology, the Fleet welcomes guests to encounter science from an ethical viewpoint; brings together community leaders of various backgrounds to examine current scientific issues from diverse perspectives; and invites the public to explore with them how science can best serve society. The traditional art of paper folding has evolved into a venerable modern art form with solid foundations in math and science. A flat sheet of material is transformed into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. Basic origami folds can be combined in a variety of ways to make intricate designs. Gemmell, the Fleet’s “Thinkering” Studio Coordinator, has taught architecture both in the US and abroad. This event will be held the first Wednesday of each month.

The dissection of found objects (patrons welcome to bring their own), emphasizing the importance of analysis and the development of the valuable skill of reverse engineering. Challenge Saturday, the last Saturday of each month, will culminate in two visitor contests––the first to successfully evaluate the use of parts from the original objects in the new constructions, and the second to draw diagrams/llustrations of the operations of either the original discarded objects or the new and improved creations.
