A plaque outside the Legislative Chamber in the Old Capitol Building in Milledgeville reads, “These grounds witnessed the greatest and most brilliant convocation ever held in the Commonwealth of Georgia. The Secession Convention January 16-19, 1861.” On January 18 & 21, 2011, one hundred fifty years after this historic event, the Legislative Chamber will again ring with the words of the irascible Herschel Johnson, the ardent secessionists Thomas Cobb and Senator Robert Toombs, and the ambitious unionist Alexander Stephens, in a reenactment of that historic and fateful 1861 convention. Be a witness of events in the room where Georgia history was made. Performances are at 7 PM with a reception following. Tickets are available from Georgia’s Old Capital Museum ($5 admission, museum members free), 478-453-1803, sally@oldcapitalmuseum.org, or visit the museum website at www.oldcapitalmuseum.org.
