Class Description 9am-12pm daily from July 6th to July 10th for ages 7-13 Your camper will take a journey across the globe during Cultural Camp. Campers will learn about the country of Japan while exploring various visual and performing arts games and activities. Campers will participate in three 45 minutes classes through out the morning with our teaching artists. Journey to Japan After centuries of instability and war, The Tokugawa shogunate (a feudal military government) gained control of Japan in 1603 with a commitment to bring peace and stability to the country. This period became known as the Edo Period and was characterized by extremely strict policies and codes of behavior. Japan was closed off to foreigners and the influence of their cultures, which not only meant that art flourished as a form of escapism, but also that indigenous art forms and traditional methods were practiced and refined without outside influence. Some of these varied art forms were woodblock printing, screen painting, kabuki theater, intricate garden design, and porcelain ceramic making. Come learn about this creative era in Japan! Special Notes This camp will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent to families a few days before camp begins. Required Supplies Please have markers, crayons, pencils, erasers, scissors, rulers, tinfoil, cardboard, and a toilet paper roll available for your camper. Supply kits for other materials needed will be available for curbside pick up at Durham Arts Council the week before camp.
