With free admission from 10:00-1:00, you can explore the museum on your own using our History Detectives Scavenger Hunt. From 1:00 until 4:00, we’ll also offer educator-led activities. Sign up for each activity separately or come for all three! 1:00-2:00 Behind the Beat workshop This workshop uses music to explore African American history, from the African beats brought to the colonies during slavery and spirituals used to communicate on the plantation, to the jazz of the Harlem Renaissance or the popular music of the Civil Rights movement. To understand history, you just have to look “Behind the Beat”! 2:00-3:00 Endless Possibilities guided tour Walk through the gallery doors and step into Africa. Your tour guide will take you from the vibrant cultures of Western Africa on a voyage through slavery, the Underground Railroad, segregation, and Civil Rights. Make history alive: play an African drum, see artifacts from the coal mining town of Buxton, or give a speech from behind Barack Obama’s podium. 3:00-4:00 Unconditional Loyalty guided tour African American’s have participated in every major conflict in the United States since the Revolutionary War, but they weren’t just fighting the enemy. They strove to break down racial boundaries while they unconditionally served their country. Hear the stories of Iowa’s African American soldiers with a guided tour of “Unconditional Loyalty”.
