EVENT: May 11, 2011 - 10th Annual Pioneer Day 9:30 am-2:30 pm. CALLING ALL TEACHERS, have we got a great Field Trip for your class! Spend your day at the Historic Museum in Hays, Kansas at Pioneer Day, Wednesday, May 11, 2011. The Ellis County Historical Society Museum, 100 West 7th Street, Hays, Kansas is sponsoring for the 10th year, Pioneer Day. This is a one-day event from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm for elementary age students K-5th grades. This is a FREE educational, outdoor FUN event for your students! We will have hands-on booths and demonstrations. You will see how the Pioneer men used a crossbow saw, how to shell corn, and see Alpaca wool being spun. There will be sack races, 3-legged races, and the relay races. You can play with old-time 'toys & games'; learn how the Pioneer women washed clothes in a washtub with homemade soap and a washboard. You can pet small animals, see alpacas, and milk a goat. In addition, a general store will be available to spend your nickels and dimes. You will see how they used stone post in the area. You will have fun participating in “fun & games in music”. There will be tours of the Volga German Haus, the Harness Shop, and our Fire Department Museum as you spend your day on the grounds of the museum. We schedule your class so everyone may have an enjoyable day. Feel free to bring sack lunches and go to one of our local parks. See the live Buffalo herd in the area.
