Join a jam, sample a class, or try an instrument! Bring your instrument, your voice, your family, or a few friends. Take a look at the afternoon’s festivities and mark your calendars – we welcome community members to participate! Family Music Music for Children – 3:00pm-4:00pm, led by Irene Chagall (Music for Children faculty). This workshop for children ages 4 – 7 demonstrates a Music for Children class where children develop musicianship through rhythm games, songs, creative movement and use of Orff instruments. Instrument Petting Zoo – 4:00pm-5:00pm, led by CMC faculty, staff and students including Executive Director, Chris Borg. Have a listen or try out any of the following instruments with CMC faculty and students: violin, viola, cello, guitar, banjo, ukulele, flute, and piano. Jazz/Latin Jams Jazz Jam Session - 3:00pm-4:00pm – led by Marcus Shelby (Leader of CMC’s Teen Jazz Orchestra). Play jazz standards with other jazz lovers. Bring your instrument and get ready to play! There will be a stand-up bass available. Latin Music Jam Session - 4:00pm-5:00pm, led by Tregar Otton (Cuban Salsa Ensemble and violin faculty) with Omar Ledezma Jr. (percussion faculty and vocalist)* Join other musicians to play Latin music – from salsa to cha-cha-cha to son to Latin jazz. Bring your instrument and get ready to play! There will be a stand-up bass available. Chamber Music Open Readings 3:00-4:00pm, led by Loretta Taylor (Chamber Music Program Coordinator at CMC’s Richmond Branch, violin faculty) String players, come and join like-minded musicians for some music making. Bring your instrument and an open mind and we wlll read string chamber music from various musical styles. Music will be provided. Some sight reading ability is helpful. 4:00-5:00pm, led by Rachel Condry (Chamber Music Program Coordinator at CMC’s Mission District Branch; clarinet faculty) These days “chamber music” has come to mean a lot more than Haydn string quartets (though those are great too). Bring your instrument and an open mind and we will read through some small group pieces of various idioms, from classical to pop. Music will be provided. This activity is best for students who have intermediate to advanced sight reading ability. There will be a stand-up bass available. Piano Repertoire Workshop 3:00pm-5:00pm, led by Juliet McComas (piano faculty). Bring a piece you are working on to play and receive feedback from a CMC faculty member. Please bring an extra copy of the written music. Open to students of all levels and ages. If you would like to participate in the Piano Repertoire Workshop, rsvp to Sylvia Sherman at SSherman@sfcmc.org with your name, the name of the piece you will play and its composer. Prior sign-up is not required, but can support your experience in the workshop. Vocal Repertoire Workshop 3:00pm-5:00pm, led by Nicole Lumetta (voice faculty). Bring a piece you are working on to sing, and sheet music if you would like piano accompaniment. You will receive feedback from a CMC faculty member. Open to students of all levels and ages.
