Shake Shake Shake
by Nicole White

Animals know how to release themselves of stress and trauma by shaking.

Young children will also naturally cry and tremble when they are hurt or upset.

When an animal encounters a stressful or life-threatening event, they begin to shake or they will freeze and then shake once danger has passed.

They do this naturally.

Once their episode of shaking stops, they are usually relieved of the stress or trauma.

We humans can learn a lot by observing animals and young children.

Over the years, I’ve adopted this practice of shaking.

If any kind of stressful or traumatic event happens, I will go where I feel safe and/or alone and begin to shake with my entire body.

I’ll let sounds come out and do anything from tremble to full out shaking.

Sometimes that’s not enough and I need to add in sounds and purposely push out as much air as possible, which forces me to take in deeper breaths.

I always feel better after shaking. Or as I like to call them ‘little tantrums’.

Give shaking a try the next time something triggers you, stresses you or is a big or small trauma.

We often teach children to contain their emotions, but keeping all of those emotions locked inside doesn’t work, as they often come out in other ways such as depression, anger issues, anxiety, restlessness, etc…

It’s important to show by example that you can have a safe place to let all of those emotions out!

And just as a child who is allowed to cry or scream out their feelings, eventually the ‘trauma’ or ‘episode’ will pass, they will feel better and be able to go about their day or task.

In ANY close call while driving, I’ll find the safest way to pull over as soon as possible. If it’s on the freeway, I’ll wait until I can get off the freeway. Then I’ll sit in the car and shake, tremble, and sometimes talk or yell out my fears. When I feel complete, I’ll then continue with my travels.

This process of shaking or allowing myself to have a ‘little tantrum’ has helped me manage stress and trauma, even more than meditation!

We naturally want to release stress, anxiety, anger, depression and trauma. Shake Shake Shaking it out can help you lead a calmer and less stressful life. It can also help your children do the same.
