Homeschooling and the Holidays
It doesn’t matter what religion you are, what holidays you celebrate, or don’t celebrate, the holidays are upon us, and it is oftentimes a busy, stressful time of year. How can you educate your children and still balance the time required to do all the “extra” chores associated with the season? There are many approaches to this.

The first is to take a break from homeschooling for the holiday season. Many families do this, and for different reasons. Some families are traveling during the holidays and don’t want the added stress of school, others so they can spend the time with family that traveled to visit them. Some families just need the break, and it is a good time for it. Kids are still learning while cooking, baking, shopping, wrapping, and donating to different charities.

Another approach is to do limited lessons. Having school only for an hour or two in the morning or evening leaving the rest of the day open to the baking, errands, and other necessities. Some families concentrate on their lessons one or two days a week, leaving the rest of the week open.

Some families choose not to take a break at all in the winter. Whether this is because they do not celebrate any of the holidays, or just do something small, it works for them. Some families feel if they work hard all winter, then they can play more in the summer. Other families do just the opposite. They do a lot of their schooling in the hot months (such as in Arizona with temperatures well into the hundreds), so they can play in the nicer weather of the winter. However you take your breaks and deal with the holidays, as long as it works for your family you have struck gold.
