Experiencing the World Through a Balanced Brain

by Dr. Jeremey Fritz

The brain is composed of two sides, called hemispheres, which ideally function together to create an overall perception of the world around us. The perception of the world is different for everyone, yet when the two sides of the brain are working together, most people should view the same experience in generally the same context. For example, the main idea of a story should be factually the same for two people, while the relationship of the story to each person’s life may be completely different. The two hemispheres of the brain create a completely different picture of reality, yet this difference is not consciously perceived because both sides of the brain are in constant communication with one another.

Most people are aware that the right and left brain function differently. It is often said that if you are artistic, you are a Right-Brainer and if you are articulate that you are a Left-Brainer. With a deeper understanding of each hemisphere, it is too simplistic to assume that all artistic people have stronger right brains and that all good speakers have stronger left brains. With noting the above, it is imperative that one understands the functions of the right and left brain to better grasp the role that each hemisphere plays in shading our personal experiences. The following chart demonstrates the different functions between the two hemispheres:

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS

Small Picture

Verbal Communication

Small Muscle Control

Intelligence Quotient

Word Reading

Math Calculations

Processing Information

Conscious Actions

Positive Emotions

Receiving Auditory Input

Linear and Logical Thinking

Curious and Impulsive Actions

Like Routine/Sameness

Activates Immunity

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS

Big Picture

Nonverbal Communication

Large Muscle Control

Emotional Quotient

Comprehension

Math Reasoning

Interpreting Information

Unconscious Actions

Negative Emotions

Interpreting Auditory Input

Gets Abstract Concepts

Cautious and Safe Actions

Likes Newness, Novelty

Suppresses Immunity

As one can see, the world is experienced differently when processed through either the right or left brain. The processing of information from our internal and external world is further segregated into separate departments or networks within each hemisphere. Envision the brain as being a company, with the right and left brain acting as equal partners. Within each side of the company, multiple different departments function under the instruction of each respective partner. Each of these departments is responsible for different tasks and ultimately relay their ideas to the partner in control of each side. Because each side of the business views things differently, it is essential to have each side evaluate every job individually. After this process, the two partners get together to discuss their interpretation of the job at hand and draw a final conclusion together. With open communication between both partners, the company continues to grow and develop.

However, when the brain’s hemispheres do not communicate with each other normally, problems arise.  For example if a child’s right hemisphere has not developed to the same level as the left, they may have a hard time controlling their emotions, have an inability to process information correctly or control impulsive actions.

With a better understanding of the two sides of the brain, one can begin to appreciate the wonder and complexity of our personal experiences.  When the brain is working in harmony, the two hemispheres blend their individual interpretation into one unifying experience. The magnificence of the brain can be seen and felt in even the simplest of life experiences.
