MEETING MATH OBJECTIVES

An effective mathematics curriculum should not only teach computational skills but should help the students recognize the mathematics in their personal lives.  As they mature, those lives will include reading and interpreting a daily newspaper and/or magazines.  A natural component of that is an examination of the ways in which you can complement your regular mathematics program with material from Highlights for Children magazine.  And you can strengthen parental literacy through family activities based on that material.

Many workers in the field of adult literacy have come to recognize the fact that numerical literacy, or numeracy, is an integral part of being literate.  Even adults who are literate in terms of reading and writing often shy away from mathematical tasks because they consider themselves "not good at math."  It makes sense, then, to recognize appropriate tasks that the children can do in school and then bring home to share with older members of the family.
