| Description: Discussion group for 5th-6th graders, meeting once a week for 45 minutes on Fridays. Discussion leader uses materials developed by Touchstone Discussion Project (a nonprofit organization founded by faculty of St. John's College of Annapolis(SJC), a "great books" program). Students actively discuss with their peers short, engaging readings. The discussion lead assists students in developing skills, including discussion, critical reading, and critical thinking. Leader completed the SJC Graduate Insititute and Touchstones training for discussion leaders. He has successfully led discussions for 4th and 5th graders at an area private elementary school, including his two children who participate in this group. Hope to see your children there.

| Benefits: Introduction to engaging, short readings of 1 - 1 1/2 pages and the acquisition of fundamental discussion, critical reading and critical thinking skills. The short texts allow the participant to bring her or his experience and perspective to the text, and short individual and small group exercises help the participants develop their thoughts and responses. The favorite ground rules are "No interrupting" and "No raising hands".
