Defining Outstanding Online Learning
by Dr. Martha Angulo

Are you considering an online learning program for your student?  An outstanding online instructional program will deliver broad, engaging curriculum content in major curricular areas that include many different subjects. Students should have access to all areas at their level. Upon entering the program the student should be able to choose the curricular area he/she wishes to study: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science or Social Science. Within the curricular area the student should be able to select subjects based on a recommended course of study.

Make sure that the program includes the following;

1.    Instructional lesson format needs to be consistent
2.    Immediate feedback is necessary for both student and parent
3.    Instruction should be customized to student progress
4.    Parents need to be part of the teaching-learning program
5.    Instruction should be linked to National and State Learning Goals
6.    Appropriate Internet links need to be an integral part of each instructional lesson
7.    No plug-ins, software or additional components should be needed.  Lessons should express a broad range of topics and be written by many different authors, expressing a variety of instructional techniques.  The number of lessons in the instructional program should be increased regularly.  At a minimum the online learning program will include instruction in the four core curriculum areas, English-Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. The program will be fully accessible through the Internet, allowing registered users to access the program from any location with laptop computers, tablet computers and/or smart phones.

All online courses of study should be accredited and designed according to national and state standards (Core Standards). Content will include:

o    Technology-based curriculum activities to enliven and enrich learning

o    Online communication, collaboration and reference tools

o    Community-based activities
