Arts Education for Home School Students
by Yolanda (Yo’EL) D’Oyen

Home Schooling, though challenging, can be a dynamic adventure for you and your child(ren). As a Home School Parent, you are granted the opportunity to explore and provide a creative learning experience for them. They can develop an understanding of different subjects through a wide array of outlets. Like, the ARTS!

Research has shown that an Arts Integrated Education allows students to develop and learn more completely using all seven distinct intelligences (visual/spatial, musical, kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, verbal and logical/mathematical). An integrated Arts curriculum also provides an opportunity for students to see connections across the humanities and become assets to their communities.

Exposure to the Arts (Music, Drama, Dance, Visual Art) as a vehicle to study History, Literature, Philosophy, Math and Science, stimulates students’ imagination, critical thinking and creative skills. This multi-sensory approach to learning also enables children to learn more about themselves and encourages communication. It forges bonds between parents, children and their ever-constantly changing world; it gives them a voice and a means of expression.

In a biological sense, a culture is a place for growing things. Schools must be examined as cultures for growing human minds, bodies, and spirits. The direction this growth takes, is influenced by the opportunities schools provide to students.

As Home School Parents, you have said “Enough! Enough to the way the system has dwindled away the well-rounded, multi-faceted education of the past, through budget cuts and societal issues.” Home School Parents have undertaken a great task to provide a creative learning space for their children that used to be entrusted to “trained” educators of the times.

It is now up to brave Parents like yourself, with the help of a Diverse Home School Network, to help your child(ren) make moral, spiritual and intellectual sense of the world. Be it through different types of Art, like music, drama, and dance, you are able to influence and shape your children to become who they were created to be as individuals.

Yolanda (Yo’EL) D’Oyen has 34 years of experience as an Artist and a Bachelors of Science Degree in Business. She is the CEO of the A.R.T.S. Academy, a Visual & Performing Arts Education Program in Covina, CA.
